Canon PowerShot S90IS 10MP Digital Camera With 3.8x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom And 3-inch LCD
DPReview will present a more thorough review than any of us might care to write, so I will just give my general impressions. This camera is not perfect. If you are expected it to manage the image quality or low light performance of your Canon DSLR you will be disappointed. But the S90 is the best compact camera I have ever used. You do get more than one stop of performance over the Canon SD880IS, my previous ultra-portable camera. The F2.0 lens, lower density sensor and improved software give you that. Software matters on these small cameras and Canon's software is a pleasure to use. The aperture ring feature, which can be used to control ISO, shutter speed, Aperture and other functions is a pleasure to use and has a very cool visual UI on the back screen when in use (think of the way the old Nikon cameras showed you the aperture ring in the viewfinder). The camers is not quite as pocketable as the regular line of SD powershot cameras, but the improved image quality and control easily make up for that. I like the camera. It has tons of manual controls, nearly all obvious in function without reading the manual if you are a Canon regular. They have increased the amount of on-screen documentation. The Auto ISO feature is better than before. They get that many prosumers don't want a flash and will take a noisy photo over either a flash photo or one too slow to hand hold. I typically own two cameras: a very small camera and a very large camera. This is my small camera and I would say that in the small camera department, if you care about low light performance and image quality more than zoom factor, you will love this camera. How can it be better? well, if it had the sensor they put in the Canon 7D, it would be much better. I suspect Canon is working on such a camera. Size will be the major challenge there. So why the 5 stars if it is not perfect? Because at this price and in this size range, there is simply no better camera on the market that I know of. Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 12MP Digital Camera With 4.6x Wide Angle MEGA Optical Image Stabilized Zoom And 2.7 Inch LCD (Silver)
Very simply put. I used this camera 5 times in total, twice in the pool (no problem), once in the desert (no problem), and once in the sea, which killed it. The day after the sea experience, it would simply not turn on. What gets me is that I did everything I was supposed to do with it, as stated by the manual (ie not jump in water with it, not keep in water too long, rinse it afterwards, etc...), it is and remains dead. Very disappointed with Panasonic on this one, I loved the camera while it worked, now I keep staring at my expensive brick. IF you want to buy a camera that can die on you for no apparent reason, go ahead and get a TS1. I wont make the same mistake again. Buy Panasonic Lumix DMC TS1 Lowest Price, Order Now! @ Canon PowerShot SX120 IS User Reviews
Canon PowerShot SX120IS 10MP Digital Camera With 10x Optical Images Stabilized Zoom And 3-inch LCD
I own a Canon SD1100 IS and was looking for a camera with more zoom and more manual options. I expected the SX120 IS to take good snapshots of my kids indoors, using Auto mode, in various lighting conditions (by "good" I mean as good as my SD1100). Unfortunately, this is not the case. I haven't even tried the SX outdoors, but the results I've gotten indoors have prompted me to return the camera to the retailer. I simply need a camera that takes great shots of my kids in Auto mode. A few other things I did not care for: - The battery door was tricky to open and in some instances took me 20 seconds to successfully open. Perhaps my camera was just a lemon in this regard; I can't be certain. - The camera is somewhat heavy but does not provide a good way to hold it, at least for my small-ish hands. The very place I want to place my thumb has the Play button, and the rest of my hand seems to search for something to really hold on to. - The scroll wheel (not sure what to call it) sometimes "moves" when I could swear I haven't even touched it. I feel that the scroll wheel, while handy in some instances, causes more problems than it's worth. Any one of these annoyances might be all right on its own, but when I put all of the factors together, it's clear that this is not the camera for me. Buy Canon SX120 IS Lowest Price, Order Now! Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera With EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (Black)
Received the camera on time, it is a great camera and is easy to use. It has taken some great action shots and still shots. the only down fall is taking pictues in the dark. Even with the flash pics don't come out, a seperate flash stand fixture would be needed but how often do you take pictures is extreme low light. I also wish this was able to record vidoes. Other than that, this is a fantastic camera saved over 50 bucks going through Amazon, it has take some great shots and I highly recomend this camera to anyone. There are other web sites that were much cheaper but are scams. They try to sell you insurance and other items that are not needed Amazon is the way to go. The product is what it is and no false advertizments. JD Buy Canon Rebel XS Lowest Price, Order Now! Canon PowerShot G11 10MP Digital Camera With 5x Wide Angle Optical Stabilized Zoom And 2.8-inch Articulating LCD
Before Canon's latest release, I used a G10 as my compact camera. I bought both the S90 and G11 the first weekend they were available and have been comparing both of them to the G10 for the past couple weeks. I have taken hundreds of images using all 3 cameras side by side with the same settings. The title of "Best Compact" has been debated feverishly on the web, with most votes going to the G10 and LX3. But now, I think Canon's new release of both the S90 and G11 will put a quick end to these debates. There is no question in my mind that this pair sits above all competitors. All three of these Canon cameras benefit from the ability to shoot raw format and the 1/1.7" sensor, which is larger than the 1/2.3" sensor found in most other compact cameras. G11 vs. G10 The first thing I wanted to test was image quality and noise at high ISO settings. Most photography hobbyists and pros know that low light performance is the number one factor influencing camera and lens prices. This is the main reason an f/2.8 zoom lens costs 3-5 times as much as an f/3.5-5.6 zoom. The G11 performs superbly in this regard. RAW images from the G11 set at ISO 800 were equal to or better than RAW images from the G10 set at ISO400. Both luminance and chrominance noise were lower in the G11 images. This represents a 1 stop improvement, which is what I was hoping for. These comparisons were made with all noise reduction disabled in camera and in the DPP software. I tested all other ISOs and found the G11 to be better at all ISO settings above 100 and the 2 cameras demonstrated equal IQ at the base ISOs of 80 and 100. The feel of the G11 is almost identical to the G10. The biggest difference is that the G11 now has an articulating LCD compared to the fixed LCD on the G10. To accommodate the new LCD mount, the back of the camera was slightly redesigned. The back is now plastic instead of metal, the shortcut and play buttons are now slightly harder to reach, and the rear control dial is both smaller and has a cheaper feel. These differences are immediately apparent to someone who has used the G10 extensively, but I expect the camera will feel just fine to everyone else. I think most people would agree that the articulating LCD is worth giving up a little bit of the solid feel. I went step-by-step through the menus and features of both cameras during my comparison and most functions are very similar. One of the new features I really like is the ability to fine tune the WB. So if you find the auto white balance tends to run too warm for your tastes, just dial it cooler and it will adjust each WB calculation by the amount you specify. G11 vs. S90 Both these cameras have the same new sensor, so low light performance is identical. Canon also boasts about the S90 having a faster f/2.0 lens compared to the f/2.8 on the G10, but this part of the camera did not impress me. The lens only has the 1-stop advantage at the absolute widest setting and the max aperture closes down fast from there. The G11 lens is faster at the telephoto end and the difference is negligible at all zoom settings in between. Both lenses are equally sharp throughout their zoom ranges. The G11 has a hot shoe, but when I want to use external flashes, I dial-down the on-board flash and use it to trigger remotes. The ergonomics of the G11 and S90 are the biggest difference. I wanted to try the S90 because it boasts of equal image quality to the G11 in a smaller, lighter package. After using the S90, I think it might just be too small for my hands. On the G11, I can operate all of the controls on the right-rear of the camera with the thumb of the hand holding the camera. With the S90 there are fewer controls that I can operate one-handed and at times I feel like I might drop it, because I just can't get a good grip on it. The rear control ring on the S90 turns too easily and I have found myself unintentionally adjusting settings because of this, which was never a problem on the G10. Bundled Software The camera ships with a newer version (3.7) of Canon's Digital Photo Professional software. There is not much difference compared to older versions, but there is one nice improvement: the lens aberration section is enabled for images taken with the G11. This allows for correction of vignetting, CA and distortion. I do not understand why the same controls are not available for RAW files taken with the G10. There is still no straighten function in the software, which is a disappointment. Another disappointing factor about the software is that Canon has not yet released a new RAW Codec; the current version (1.5) does not support the S90 or G11. This allows raw files to be viewed in Windows and for thumbnail images to be created in Windows explorer. I am sure they are working on an update, but I wish they had this ready by the time the camera was released. Summary If you are considering upgrading from a G10 to a G11, I say "Go for it". With the exception of the cheaper feel on the back of the camera, there is nothing I can think of that is not equal or better on the G11. Most importantly the image quality is better. If you are trying to decide between a G11 and S90, I recommend you try them out in the store and see which one feels better to you. I still have them both and do not yet know which I will be keeping. The G11 is an excellent camera and I highly recommend it. Buy Canon PowerShot G11 On Sale Lowest Price, Order Now! @ Canon PowerShot SX120 IS
Canon PowerShot SX120IS 10MP Digital Camera With 10x Optical Images Stabilized Zoom And 3-inch LCD
It is a good camera, as a powershot S1, S2, and S5 ex-user, I bought it because of its portability. I love the powershot S series ultra-zoom cameras, but now I want a smaller camera. But keep in mind, in this case, smaller the size, fewer the features. So this review is directed to S-series users that look for ultra-zoom portability. First the good: - Good image quality, IMHO. As I am not a professional, just an enthusiast, my amateur eyes tell me that the quality is almost the same of my previous S5, maybe a little more noisy. - AA batteries: For me it is a must! - Good battery life: Not as good as S series, as it uses only 2 AA, but It lasts two days of heavy using. in my last vacation, I took more than 1000 pictures, lots with flash, and changed the batteries maybe 4 times at most - Sony Cycle Energy 2000 mAh. - Good optical image stabilization: same performance as S-series - Manual control over shutter/apperture/ISO. A must! - I-contrast: I realy think it works! The dark areas with bright background photos are better than the ones with S5. - Automatic lens cover: No more manually covering the lens like on S-series. Now the bad: - No color accent!!!! Why Canon? As it is a software feature, why strip this useful feature (I think) from this camera? I loved it on my S5 and now it is gone. (Ok, I could do it with photoshop...) - No color swap too - I did not use this one very much, so no big deal for me. - No stich assist!!!!! Why again, Canon? No space left on the function dial? No space for more Digic4 code? :( - No optical zoom with video... I am not a camera engineer, but it looks like a very difficult feature to fit on smaller cameras. As a user, I think: move the zoom lens, keep focusing and evaluating exposure - No big deal. It does not seem to be difficult, but, it may be, as a lot of pocket cameras lacks this feature. Sx120 has only digital zoom while recording videos (I hate the output quality of digital zoom), so I do not use it. For the record, you can use the optical zoom before starting the video recording, but it gets locked on this position until the video recording stops. - No HD video: For me, it is no big deal, I like the 640x480 quality. Bottom line: S-series users, it is a good camera, but I do not know why some good software features were stripped. I have accepted that it is the price for portability (it can fit on a large pocket), but as soon as a new AA-battery, compact, ultra zoom model with the SX120 lacking features comes around, I will sell this camera.
